Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Diet and Incidence of Stroke

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy products and has reduced amounts of saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. This diet considerably reduces blood pressure in hypertensive and normotensive individuals. Because hypertension is the major risk factor for stroke, the DASH diet may lower stroke risk. Few studies have examined this hypothesis. Therefore, we assessed the association between adherence to the DASH diet and incidence of stroke in Swedish middle-aged and older adults.
